The people in the episode talk of planets that we do not know of; are they
from earth or is this show set on some planet or galaxy far from ours?
Based on the language and clothing it appears that the crew originated from
and earth like planet. However, it never gives a date of origin or planet of
origin. With the incredibly advanced weaponry and spaceships if they were from
earth it is most likely hundreds of years ahead of the present. The planets
they land on appear to have earth like qualities and supplies with people who
speak English. The people seem to have lost a sense of proper government
because the ones with the biggest guns rule things. Also, some of the crew-members
speak an unknown language.
What purpose does the prostitute serve? She is a person and you obviously
can't just strand her but does she do anything besides have sex for money?
The prostitute would come in handy should there be a conflict that cannot be
resolved calmly. Her "services" can help smooth out the problem. If
she has sex for money as well she can buy things that could be useful on the
ship. The rest of the crew looks down on her but she seems to have no problem
with her profession and sees it as a useful way to make a living. Also, she
doesn't try to force herself on anyone on the ship, which makes it easier for
them to live and work around her. The prostitute appears as almost a mother
like figure to the mechanic when the officer shoots her.
