Blog 3: Welcome to the Hellmouth

Buffy’s strength is referenced multiple times in the episode. Does she have superhuman strength?

I can’t be certain but I would definitely say she has superhuman strength. In one part of the episode she broke a locked door with seemingly little effort. An average person couldn’t break a door so easily. Later on she fights a vampire that is much bigger and seemingly stronger than her, but she seems to hold her own. On top of this I would imagine that vampires have above human strength. These two demonstrations combined with characters talking about her strength in the episode lead me to believe she has superhuman strength.

Buffy seemed confident in her ability and even refused guidance from her “watcher,” but when the episode ended she seemed to be in a life threatening position. Is she ready for “The Harvest” that is coming?

Buffy definitely has many things to work on before she is ready to take on larger and a greater amount of foes. Early in the episode she wants nothing to do with any vampire slaying and tells the librarian that she can take care of herself. When she goes out later that night she almost lets her friends get killed by a couple vampires then finds herself in a bad spot. In the last scene she comes off extremely confident and kills one of the vampires with ease but then is caught off guard by another vampire. She manages to hold her own for awhile, but in the end she seems to be in a really dangerous position. After seeing this I think she needs to take her watchers advice and train more. If she can’t handle the fight she was in she is not prepared for “The Harvest” that the vampires are planning.
