In the teaser for “Game of Thrones” the leader of the small
group of men tells the young man that if he leaves he will be beheaded as a deserter.
What does this say about the society “Game of Thrones” is set in?
I think
it says they value law and honor a lot. The man really didn’t want to go and
investigate, but the leader gave him the option of going or being beheaded.
When they went to investigate they were attacked by monsters with glowing blue
eyes. The two older men were killed, but the younger man fled back to the
kingdom beyond the wall. Even though he was given the option of fleeing or
dying, he was pretty much dead either way. At his beheading, after the teaser,
he even said sorry knowing that deserting his people was dishonorable.
Ned Stark’s catch phrase seems to be, “winter is coming.” This
is even the title of the episode; what could this mean?
Taken
literally it would mean that winter time is coming, and we know in societies
like the one they are living in winter is a hard time for people to live. We
also learn that winter is especially harsh where the starks live all the way
north by The Wall. Winter could also just be a metaphor for something bad that
is coming such as war. Having watched the first two seasons of this show I know
we never really see winter literally come even though they keep saying its
coming. I think that they literally mean winter is coming, but it also serves
as a perfect metaphor for all the bad things and hard times that are ahead of
the Starks and people of the kingdom in general.
