Blog 18: Expanded Outline

PSA:

Intro to show: Firefly "The Train Job".  Firefly is a show that addresses stereotypes about criminals and their characteristics, mostly being immoral and thieves.

Scene I: Scene where Mal returns the medicine to the people of Paradiso
-By this point Mal realized that what he had stolen was medicine and that the people of Paradiso desperately need it.

Analysis I: stereotypes: After stealing the cargo and finding out what that cargo consisted of, Mal decided that he wanted to do the right thing and return the medicine back to the people of Paradiso
            -Criminals are bad
                        -Immoral
                        -Cold-hearted
-Mal redeems himself
-sees the wrong choice he made and tries to do right

Scene II: Scene where Mal fights Nikolai's men and tries to return their half of the payment

Analysis II: Stereotype: Criminals are natural thieves
-Wants to return the money because they didn't actually complete the mission
-Chooses not to steal the money even though he clearly has the opportunity

Implications: The writers of Firefly undermine the stereotypes that our society has on criminals and the characteristics that they possess.

Real world connection: This is much the same as how our society views certain characteristics a person might have as being those of a criminal.

Claim I:  Our society stereotypes certain categories and characteristics as being those of a criminal.

Claim II: Those stereotypes encase those people in a biased and unfair environment.

  1. Good outline, plenty of information, should have no trouble expanding this.
