Blog 15: Summary of First Source

My first source is  titled "Race, Punishment, and the Michael Vick Experience"

Summary:  This article focuses mostly on the stereotypes that our society has linked between races.  Mostly that of minorities.  The article shows that although minorities respect and identify the law as being legitimate, they often find that it discriminates against them in an unfair way.  The authors decided to conduct an experiment with 400 individuals and see whether they thought it was fair that Michael Vick was reinstated into the NFL after admitting to federal charges against him for dog fighting.  Their results showed that the differences in views by whites and non-whites were very different as well.  The study showed that whites tended to lean towards the fact that Vick's punishment was not severe enough and that he should not have been allowed to reenter the league.  While non-whites tended to agree with the actuality of what had happened and believed that he should be reinstated.  The conclusion that this study came to was that differences exist in how races perceive and acknowledge the law and its punishments.

  1. This source would be great if you are writing about Star Trek and the episode wear they determine if Data is considered property or not and how they discriminate him.

  2. Do you mean that like in that people viewed the law differently in deciding whether or not he had rights? Or in a stereotype kind of way?

  3. I meant it in a stereotype kind of way because a lot of football players are just classified as thugs.
