Blog 9: Expanded Outline

I. Background
- The episode "Measure of a Man", in the Star Trek: New Generation series, is about the struggle of Captain Picard to help Data fight for his rights.

II. Scene I: The Poker Table "Bluff"
- Data plays poker with a few of the crew members in the star fleet and loses a hand to a bluff

III. Analysis Scene 1
- Data does not understand the meaning of the lie or "bluff"
- Data is intrigued with the "bluff"

IV. Scene 2: The First Session of the Case
- Commander Riker prosecutes the side of Commander Maddox unwillingly, as Captain Picard defends the rights of Lt. Commander Data in court judged by Louvois.

V. Analysis Scene 2
- This scene portrays the view of Commander Maddox in his ideal that Data is only a machine
- Pulls out his arm and shows wires
- States that Data was made from the dream of a man

VI. Scene 3: The Second Session of the Case
-Captain Picard gives his defense in the case after talking with Guinan about advice.

VII. Analysis Scene 3
-Captain Picard gives his defense in proving Data deserves the right to choose
-Data is proven to be Intelligent and Self Aware, but Picard leaves the third requirement of Consciousness to be answered by everyone in the court room
-Picard explains that by letting Data be shut down and taken apart, the future would hold way for more generations of slavery by creating hundreds or thousands of Data's or "disposable humans".

VIII. Implications
-The episode and writers are trying to question the audience in determining if they believe Data should have the right to choose his own fate or not.  Also, the writers want to argue on how the world's society perceives the natural human rights given to all living and the future guessing of more races being persecuted into slavery.
