The subject of my primary source analysis (PSA) is where
Tyrion Lanister’s loyalty lies. I want to start off the paper with background
of the Lanister and Stark family. This will show why it would be hard to be on
both sides like Tyrion seems to be. I want to analyze the specific scene in
“Garden of Bones” where Tyrion defies King Jofferey, his nephew, by stopping
his abuse of Sansa Stark. This shows that he is sympathetic toward the Starks,
but he stays with his family and doesn’t outright betray them. I think that the
answer is that Tyrion is on his own side. Obviously the Lanister’s are stronger
and more powerful so he isn’t going to join with the Starks, but he will help
them out where he can. Tyrion remains loyal to his family, but he is also
sympathetic toward the Starks. I could expand beyond the evidence in this
episode by showing more scenarios where Tyrion helps the Starks and others
where he sides with his own family. For example in the very first episode he
tells his siblings he wants Bran Stark to live so he can tell the interesting tale
he witnessed. If Bran stark were to live and tell people what he saw people
would know his sibling’s secret and his family would be in trouble. I think
Tyrion is an interesting character because of the stance he takes between the
Starks and Lanisters. I think he is a
complex character that will be interesting to analyze.
